FOOD POISONING = FIRST TASTE OF APPLE JUICE

I remember a night in the summer of 1946 in Bay Farm, I was 8 years old, my sister Vickie was 7 and my older sister Kay was our baby sitter while our mom took the rest of the family to work downtown in Slocan City. My sister, Kay was  11 yrs  old (our chief cook & bottle washer).

One day in early September, she served us fried wieners that she got from the pantry and some sliced potatoes  for lunch. Ate we did, however all three of us suffered gastroenteritis later that night.   There was no refrigeration those days and  I guess the wieners were sour or had an off-putting smell and she did not know !   We had a massive GI attack!   Possible Listeria or some other food borne illness! The toilet was not  close enough, we were hospitalized for 4-5 days in Slocan.     They forced us to drink fluid and Sunrype apple juice was introduced to us …Yuk  ! Vickie and I slept in onesingle  hospital bed.  (she at the foot and me and the head).   Kay was delirious , Vickie & I suffered in silence.

The Slocan Hospital staff served both the Japanese Canadian community and the local community well. The hospital stall were 90% nisei Japanese Canadians and my sister Marge was a candy striper that gave out books, candy, pencil and paper to the patients.

We were two weeks late  to start  school,  downtown school was a  mile away.    We attended Pine Crescent School for three weeks and then in mid October,  we were relocated to  New  Denver.
