This is in 1950. I was grade 6, 12 yrs old ……
Lucy, my friend lived in downtown New Denver (Nelson ranch area). I was visiting her this warm afternoon (went by bike from orchard). We played, played, and played, then Mrs. Hoshino said “why don’t you girls go pick huckleberries, I will bake you a pie ? “ So Lucy and I went down the hill into the bushes near the school and picked some ripe huckleberries. With our container full, we climbed back up to her house and in time, she made a yummy pie and I had my first berry pie. Maybe my first pie? It was delicious!
Lucy and I had a lot of fun together, she was the only daughter and was more privileged than me. Her father and my father both came from the Kanagawa prefecture in Japan and they were good friends pre war. Sadly they both deceased at a young age.
